ABSTRACT: In GTS2004, the Quaternary was omitted from the formal hierarchy of the time scale, and designated as an informal climatostratigraphic unit spanning the last ~2.6 Ma of the Neogene System/Period. This paper reports on recent progress towards formally defining the Quaternary.
